Veteran Tax Attorney Hershel Wein Joins Birch Risk Advisors from Wilson Sonsini
Wein brings four decades of experience and a legacy of success in tax law and transactions
NEW YORK and LOS ANGELES — August 20, 2024 — Birch Risk Advisors, a leading provider of sophisticated structuring, tax insurance and tax credit transfer solutions, announced today that Hershel Wein has joined the team as Senior Advisor, Tax in the New York office. Wein will advise clients on transactional risk across a wide range of tax exposures.
Wein is an accomplished tax professional with almost 40 years of experience in tax law and advisory services. He brings extensive expertise in partnership tax, real estate investment trusts (REITs), fund formation, renewable energy, and structured finance transactions to the Birch Risk Advisors team.
Most recently, Wein served as the lead tax advisor for Wilson Sonsini’s renewable energy practice. As Partner in the Energy and Infrastructure Group, he collaborated with clients and internal teams to structure tax-efficient transactions and investments. Prior to Wilson Sonsini, Wein was a Principal in the Washington National Tax Practice of KPMG. He provided specialized tax advisory services to clients focusing on structured finance, NOL monetization, REITs, UBTI, financial products, and controversy resolution. Earlier in his career, Wein was a Partner at Dewey and LeBoeuf. During his tenure there, he advised clients on numerous tax credit and alternative energy transactions; project finance transactions; real estate transactions; corporate joint ventures; partnership and corporate restructurings and workouts; and cross-border financings and investments. He also advised financial institutions in structuring and implementing structured finance and derivatives transactions, pension funds, and other tax-exempt entities in their investment activities, as well as sponsors of, and investors in, all types of private investment vehicles.
